Description

Course Description:

HAZWOPER 16 - Hours

 

This course is designed for personnel who respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances as part of the initial response to the site for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property, or the environment from the effects of the release in a defensive fashion without actually trying to stop the release, and to contain the release from a safe distance, keep it from spreading, and prevent exposures. Topics covered in the course include: basic hazard and risk assessment techniques; selection and use of proper personal protective equipment; hazardous material terms; control, containment, and confinement operations; decontamination procedures; the incident command system; toxicology; and, pre-event and event specific planning. First responders at the operational level shall have training or have had sufficient experience to objectively demonstrate competency in the following areas: 

 

Topics include:

v  Understanding of what hazardous substances are, and the risks associated

v  Understanding of the potential outcomes associated with an emergency created when hazardous substances are present

v  The ability to identify hazardous substances, if possible.

v  The need for additional resources, and to make appropriate notifications to the communication center.

v  Knowledge of the basic hazard and risk assessment techniques.

v  Select and use proper PPE provided to the first responder – operations level.

v  Understanding of basic hazardous materials terms.

v  Perform basic control, containment, and/or confinement operations and rescue injured or contaminated persons within the capabilities of the resources and PPE available with their unit.

v  Implementing basic equipment, victim, and rescue personnel decontamination procedures.

v  Understanding of the relevant standard operating procedures and termination procedures.

 

**Students will be issued one student notebook and a Certificate of Compliance.
